RECAP: Gracie’s Galla (AKA: Shark Beach 2 Album Release)

After weeks of anticipation, the day of Gracie's Galla was finally upon us.

Despite being endlessly excited to finally show off our new sound as a trio, the day started out a little weird.

Like, I found out my printer is too old for my computer. I don't need to go into too much detail, but let's just say I needed to print something and... I was hysterical.

To be fair, nothing was really going as planned that day. It's like the universe was trying to say something when it began to rain. This forced the event that had originally been planned as an outdoor event to become indoors.

This wouldn't be a big deal. A little cramped? Sure, but we were used to playing basements. As long as we had power, we could still party!

As David and I drove down the main drag on our way to the venue, we noticed the traffic lights weren't working.

Uh oh. Power outages: my synth's only weakness.

Sure enough, the venue's power was out. We had to think quickly and figure out what to do next: acoustic show, generator, or alternative venue.

David made some phone calls and returned with good news. Everything could be moved to Dormouse Theatre within the hour!

Hate to brag, but I was pretty geeked to be in the band with David that day. Between him, Stephen (the owner of Dormouse), and Jarad, the event transplanted and operated seamlessly. It was incredibly impressive to see something so chaotic come together so beautifully.

Anyway...

As people started to arrive, they were greeted by Erin Emery who sang sweet songs with a ukulele.

Fun Fact: the Gracie of Gracie's Galla is Erin's dog. During Erin's set, one of my favorite things to see was Gracie vibing, so clearly happy to be out with her parents listening to one of them rock out.

Following Erin were The Frogs and Toads and they ruled! As if they were pulled directly from 1994, they absolutely killed their set. I was so geeked by their covers of 'Blister in the Sun' and 'Gigantic'.

Those were some tough acts to follow, but as soon as the Frogs and Toads cleared the stage, I started getting my keys ready for my set with Jake Simmons and the Little Ghosts followed immediately by Katy Needs A Life.

The JSLG set was a big success. I think we really rocked it.

The KNAL set was also pretty well. As mentioned before, this was our first time out as a trio and it was an adjustment to hear it all on stage. My voice cracked a few times, but maybe it worked out. I don't know. The music is emotional... maybe no one noticed? I don't know. People were nice and said they liked it.

It was a day full of music and there was still more action to come, but things took a very chill turn as Pistol Gang took the stage.

Pistol Gang has been around the scene for a few years and never stops amazing every audience with his lo-fi bedroom pop. While its dreamy and somber tone completely captivates crowds, there are these moments of cheekiness that give it youthful angst.

Finally, it was Shark Beach 2's turn to get the crowd dancing and they did just that!

Shark Beach 2 is super rad. They bring back the hype surf-rock sound of the 60s to the modern day. They add their own spice to the mix by having a psychedelic trumpet as the lead instrument.

This event was a lot of fun and we're so grateful to have taken part. We will always remember this crazy day when the music scene, art community, and Dormouse Theatre came together in a pinch and threw a heckin party.

Until next time...

-Katy
